Shortest day, longest night.

The 21st of December is always referred to as the shortest day, in the northern hemisphere. However, for nocturnal hunters it is the longest night, and a chance to feast. Last night the tawny owls were out early, and calling to each other in the woodland surrounding our house. I was enchanted by their conversation, and happy that they, at least, could take advantage of the long darkness. Bon appetit, my feathered neighbours!

  1. Owls.. what an evocative sound they make.
We were up last night at 2am listening to brave robins and blackbirds singing out, heralding the darkness or urging the dawn.. who knows?
